War of Independence combat momento tallion of the 3rd battalion of Palmach 'Yiftach Brigade', circa. 1949-50; silvered bronze; not maker-marked; size: 2.45 x 2.85cm; weight: 5.65g.
The obverse bears the Palmach emblem with legend "5709 The Third Battalion Yiftach"; on reverse 6 key operations of the battalion since the start of the Jewish year 5709 (eg. October 1948): operation Yiftach, [liberation of] Tzfat/Safed, operation Danny, [liberation of] Lod, operation Yoav, Beit Hanun.
The Yiftach brigade was formed in late May 1948 of the 1st and 3rd battalions under the command of the Palmach commander, Yigal Allon; the brigade got its name from the operation it particpated in, 'Yiftach' - and this name was derived from the initials of Allon's underground nickname "Yigal Faikovich of Tel Hai". A rare momento as this is from a sub-unit level; the 3rd battalion was known as "The Galillean" battalion.
