Simon Leo Reinisch was an Austrian Jewish Egyptologist & Africanist, founder of Egyptology & African Studies in Austria, rector of the University of Vienna; discovered Tanis in 1866. He was commemorated with this medal at the time of his retirement. Scharff is described by Forrer as "one of the most celebrated Medallists of modern times" (vol. 5 p.358; listed p.374).
