Description
Palestine (Russia?): Rishon LeZion Jewish settlement token, c. late 19th C. (1889/92?); copper; may be maker-maked "J" or Heb. "Lamed"; size: 28.5 x 33.5mm; weight: 8.15g. Obv.: orchard & fields of RLZ; Heb. date of "5642" (1882) in exergue; leg. upper edge (Yeshayahu, ch. 41): "The first to Zion here they are, and to Jerusalem a portent I shall give"; on bottom edge, "Colonia Rishon LeZion". Rev: image twin windows: depicting prayers at Western Wall & seed sower; w/Star of David above + leg. "Who will deliver from Zion the salvation of Israel" (Psalms, 14) & "If I Forget Thee O Jerusalem, May My Right Hand Forget its Cunning". Possible makers-mark to right of 2nd window. Possibly issued when local Great Synagogue inaugurated (1889) or when RLZ was 10 years old (1892); spelling errors suggest foreign make. In UNC, almost proof-like, so rare.
