American Jewish Day -Century of Progress exhibition Judaica medal, 1933 by Carmi
18870160
US: "Jewish Day - Century of Progress" exhibition medal, Chicago, 1933; by A. Carmi(?); struck in brass; weight: 10.9g; size: 32mm. Obverse depicts Star of David with Hebrew date for year "5693"; artist's name lightly engraved between the swirls of the design; on reverse image of Moses bearing the Tablets descending Mount Sinai and legend in Hebrew "And Moses Descended Unto the People". The "Jewish Day" is recorded by some observers as "the greatest Jewish spectacle ever staged in Chicago", and it took place on July 3, 1933, at Soldier Field, before more than 125,000 people. It was sponsored by the Jewish Agency for Palestine (the quasi-governmental authority of the Jewish community in Palestine), with the President of the Zionist Congress, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, specially invited as the keynote speaker. The musical-theatrical pageant "The Romance of A People" was the culminating event of the day (which took five years to plan) which commemorated Jewish contributions to the city of Chicago since its founding in 1833. The "Jewish Day" was one of around 24 such days planned by the Fair Committee to commemorate the contributions of various nationalities which comprised the city of Chicago - as the Jews identified themselves closely with Palestine, the Jewish Agency was involved in the organizations and hence the themes of the event and this token. In AU with some surface residue from coin holder.

French anti-Semitic Judaica Philippe Duke of Orleans/anti-Dreyfus medal, 1900
19270184
France: Philippe Duc D'Orleans / anti-Dreyfus medal, 1900; struck in brass (silvered); designer unknown (unmarked); 30.5mm, 8g: obverse bears left facing bust of Philippe VIII and general legend in French around; reverse, text in center and around edge (in capital letters): "Je replacerai mon pays au premier rang des nations avec le concours de tous les vrais Francais / Je ne vengerai que les injures faites a la patrie * Philippe *" ("I will put my country at the forefront of nations with the support of all true French / I do not avenge the insult to the country"). In VF+/EF (lack of detail probably due more to weak strike than to actual wear). Philippe Duke of Orleans (1869-1926) was an English-born Orleanist claimant to the French throne as Philippe VIII from 1894-1926. An avid expeditioner, he saw in holding the title to the thrown a way of financing his hobby and veered towards the Royalist faction in France to secure his legitimacy to and position on the thrown. The "Dreyfus Affair" which erupted the same year Philippe acended the thrown tainted the positions of conservative and liberal factions in France and saw the Royalists and Philippe, take an anti-Dreyfus and even anti-Semitic stance on the affair which lasted up to 1906 and even further on. This medal was issued a few times in 1899 and 1900 both to legitimize Philippe's claim to the thrown as well as to echo his conservative credentials through references to the Dreyfus Affair ("support of all True Frenchmen / insult to the country").

Silver Judea Restituta clandestine Jewish immigration award by Arazi/Minerbi
20870221
Italy (Israel): "Judaea Restituta" / "And the Sons Have Returned to their Home" medal, 1946; by Jewish-Italian medallist Arrigo Minerbi; struck in silver by Stefano Johnson of Milano; size (medal): 35mm; weight: 29g. Obverse: sailboat with Hebrew legend "Ve Shavu Banim LeGvulam" (Yirmiyahu Ch.31 v.16) above & dates 5705-5706 (1945-1946) in exergue; Minerbi's initials, left + "800" silver, Johnson's on right edge. Reverse: Latin legend "Judea Restituta" (a play on Roman "Judea Capta" coins of 70+ AD) with arch of Titus & gate of Jerusalem's Old City & dates as on obverse in Roman numerals. Commissioned by Yehuda Arazi, Italy commander of "Mossad le Aliya Bet" (secret department of illegal emigration to Palestine) as token of gratitude to local civilians & officials who assisted him in enabling Jews to escape to Palestine, specifically following the "La Spezia affair" (April 1946) in which 2 illegal emigrant ships were stopped by the British, 1000+ Jews revolted, staged a hunger strike & occupied the port - and the public outcry caused the British to release the boats to Palestine. Awarded starting Passover eve, 1946; we estimate that 100-200 were issued. Rare; considered to be Israel's first official medal even as a pre-State issue.
