Palestine/Israeli Hapoel sports semi-military maritime section member's pin
24970347
Palestine/Israel: Hapoel sports association maritime 'section' member's pin, circa. 1940's-50's; size: 24mm; weight 1.95g. The sea-branch of Hapoel was founded from fishermen, on the Yarkon river north of Tel Aviv by the Haganah militia in 1925; originally called the "HaYarkon Youth" it was renamed the "sea section of Hapoel" (the sea company of Hapoel Tel Aviv) in 1927, and up into the 1950's it functioned in a semi-military fashion, employed both in the transfer of [illegal] Jewish immigrants to Palestine as well as in defence matters. In 1959 the force became a competitive sports branch of Hapoel and is known today as the "Hapoel Tel Aviv Sea Club". Estimated date of the pin is based on font style and emblem design.

Eretz Israel/Yishuv undocumented military organization emblem pin, c. 1920s-30s; 2.45g, 3.2 x 1.5cm: Star of David w/"Zion" in Bezalel style writing surmounted on crossed swords - reminiscent of WWI German veterans' medals. Probably belongs to either the "Association of Jewish Officers in Eretz Israel" (אגודת הקצינים העבריים), founded in Tel Aviv in 1935, or "Union of Jewish Combatants" (התאחדות לוחמי החזית העברים בארץ–ישראל) whose emblems used a similar motif. Other possible organizations are "Association of Veterans of the Jewish Battalions in E.I." (איגוד החיילים המשוחררים מהגדודים העבריים בארץ–ישראל) and the "E.I. Association of Jewish War Particiants" (האיגוד הארץ–ישראלי של משתתפי המלחמה היהודים). Eretz Israeli Judaic militaria helmet of Tel Aviv Mishmar Ezrachi Civil Guard
18270484
Palestine/Yishuv: helmet of the Tel Aviv "Mishmar Ezrachi" ('Civil Guard'), 1938- early '40's; by Pleese Ltd. of Holon. The helmet shell is in blue-gray color, bearing the 1st version of the force's emblem on front with unit number. As with other period Pleese-made helmets, this made from a single metal sheet with a thick liner (leather lining & padded base) held by 2 rivets. The leather chin strap has broken off & liner a little wobbly. The guard was established by the Tel Aviv municipality in 1938 as a volunteer force for maintaining order at public events & assisting new/illegal immigrants; in WWII it was active in civil air-defense and given powers identical to municipal inspectors, and given identity cards, ranks & work procedures. It was under municipal control until its reassignment to the Haganah in 1941-42.

WWII Judaic militaria mint original Palestine Regiment hat badge 1942-43
16470485
Palestine: rare original version metal hat badge of the Palestine Regiment, 1942-1943: slightly curved with two pronged loop backing; smooth reverse; not maker marked (probably J.R.Gaunt as a sketch from it exists); weight: 9.85g. A short-lived Arab-Jewish formation based on the existing "Buffs" infantry companies, whose emblem was unpopular with the Jews. The uniqueness of this specific piece is that it does belong to the Palestine Regiment: crude gold-gilt versions with rough lumpy surfaces and improvised slider backings are more often encountered - these probably being those worn by the Jewish Brigade's 2nd battalion (as seen in period photographs).

WWII Eretz Israeli Hebrew Charles de Gaulle publicity booklet by D Shochat 1941
16270486
Palestine/Yishuv: early Charles de Gaulle publicity coverage - in Hebrew, 1941: a 61-page paperback booklet, number 4 of the then wartime series of booklets on personalities and leaders called "People and Events", entitled "General Charles de-Gaulle", written by Dr. David Shochat and published by Din press in Tel Aviv with the assistance of the "Association for Free France in Eretz Israel", whose chairman, Mordechai (Mark) L. Gorodisky wrote the preface. The book covers De-Gaulle's childhood, military background and experience, the fall of France and his positions regarding the need to create a new army and liberate Europe. A fascinating Jewish-Israeli perspective on De Gaulle and his image as a fighter for liberty early in World War II. Worn cover with some edge crumbles, but otherwise intact. Gorodisky served as the chairman of the Association of the Friends of Belgium in Eretz Israel and also as the president of the Committee for France in Eretz Israel, until 1947.

Israeli War of Independence Palmach member's pin with variant design, 1948-1949
20770490
Rare variant of the Palmach emblem breast badge, c. 1948-1949; not maker-marked: this is supposed to be the design of Yitzhak Meir based on the original by Shoshana Spector; size: 1.2 x 1.5cm; weight: 0.8g: bears 6-leaved sheaths (instead of the usual 4, as per the Palmach's official emblem design), and the area below the sword, between the wheat sheaths is filled in and not punched-out as on other such pins. Reverse has safety-pin attached. The pin was issued to everyone who was a Palmach member prior to 29 November 1947 (the date on which the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to partition Palestine - the unofficial start of the 1947-49 Israeli War of Independence). Veterans say it was issued just prior to the declaration of independence, during a Palmach assembly at the 'HaBima' theater commemorating the force's 7th anniversary, on 7 May 1948, when it was less dangerous to be seen in Mandatory Palestine openly identified as a member of the as-then underground force. The pin was usually worn on the flap of the left pocket of an army shirt/tunic, sometimes with cloth backing, though rarely seen worn. The Palmach existed as an independent armed force even after the IDF was created, until November 1948, when it was absorbed into the Israeli Army; it numbered about 6,500 fighters of whom 1,500 fell in the War of Independence. The Palmach pin was later replaced in 1951 by the blue and white War of Independence ribbon.

19970491
Palestine/Yishuv: Irgun-Etzel member's pin, circa. 1940s; not maker-marked (emblem designed by Lili (Ayala) Strassman-Lubinsky, 1938); size: 18 x 20mm; weight: 2.15g. The pin depicts the organization's emblem of an outstretched arm holding a rifle against a map of 'Greater Israel', set against a design of the crenelated battlements of the Old City of Jerusalem, with leaf spray at base and the Etzel's motto "Only Thus" (Hebrew 'Rak Kach') in exergue. Rare undocumented numbered award issued by Irgun/Etzel/IZL Zionist underground
21770492
Palestine/Israel: rare undocumented numbered decoration of Irgun/Etzel Zionist-Revisionist underground, circa. late 1940s-early 1950's; not maker-marked; size: 25.50 x 12.50mm; weight: 4.25g. Single contoured rectangular metal piece with 2 colored stripes, blue & white, on a coarse surface, with the Etzel's emblem within circle superimposed in the center. On the reverse is a stamped number (1523) + screw-back with washer. The reverse is incused along the area where the organization's emblem appears on the front. Undocumented award: some say issued to IZL members in the Jewish Brigade (due to the blue-white flag device on the pint), but serial numbers seen on other examples are higher than the Brigade's size. The badge was probably awarded during or after the 1948 War of Independence in recognition of service, as with Palmach, Haganah & Lechi awards; this is a credible suggestion as the official "Etzel Ribbon" was only created in 1979, and there is no mention of the Etzel "veterans Association" (est. 1961) on this piece.

Israeli Army/IDF Independence War era military training manual The Rifle 1948
20570498
Nascent Israeli Army training manual "The Rifle" 1942 3rd edition reprinted June 1948. The booklet is of a standard paperback type produced in 1948 by the "Training Division of the High Command", here this is booklet 3 of volume A of a training series called "Light Weapons Training": the cover gives the date of 14 May 1948 (Israel's independence date - prior to the establishment of the Israeli Army, when the Jewish military forces were still primarily the 'Haganah') although the printing time is given as June 1948 (when the IDF already came into being). The booklet has a thick paper cover and contains 64 pages, with many illustrations. Although David ('Mickey') Marcus wrote a military training manual of his own for the IDF based on his West Point education and experience it is very possible that these translations of British military training manuals were reprinted in line with Marcus' observation that the Israeli forces largely lacked even rudimentary military training: his manual was published after his death and the printed date here is from the same month as his death.
