1st version Israeli Army/IDF khaki Hitelmacher hat with Yiddish hatmakers handstamp
20170488
Rare khaki first version of the Israeli Army 'Hitelmacher' hat bearing the IDF metal insignia badge, circa. 1948. Of the two major varieties produced, this is the earlier, American-made issue in khaki denim (the other version, of Israeli manufacture is made of green denim), and stamped by the donating Yiddish hat makers union of America. This first issue was part of a donated shipment of hats specially produced for the new Israeli Army by the American-Jewish hat makers' union, whose Yiddish title "hitel-macher" (hat-maker) became the Israelis' coined name for these uniquely designed pieces of headwear with fastened collapsable sides (for neck-protection against the sun). The IDF quartermasters' symbol (the Hebrew letter 'Tzadi' in a circle) is stamped on the inside crown of the hat. On the inside rim is the key and significant characteristic of this first issue of hats - the maker's mark: a stamp in transliterated Yiddish spelled in Hebrew letters, reading: "Ai Matana Von Americaner Hitel-Macher Durch Der Initziation Von Trier Union Komitet Fur Histadrut" ('A present of the American hat-makers through the initiative of the Union Committee of the Histadrut' - the Histadrut is the Zionist labor union in Israel).

Israeli Army/IDF/Palmach Independence War era green military sock hat 1947-48
22070489
Rare Israeli Army (IDF) olive green sock hat ("Kova Gerev" in Hebrew), circa. 1947-48. Though widely seen and used during the 1947-49 War of Independence, these hats are surprisingly difficult to come by, possibly because of their fate in the hands of moths and vulnerability to wear and tear in the field: this piece is in near-mint condition. The hat is of double-layered fabric, sewn shut at the head, and can be double folded along the base rim. During the War of Independence, it was widely used by and identified with the elite "Palmach" (strike company) forces, though it was also used elsewhere among the Israeli forces. Around the time the Palmach was absorbed into the IDF, in November 1948, the main pieces of cloth headwear worn by Israeli soldiers were 'hitelmacher' hats, Kangol berets, and various forms of 'bush hats'. The piece is not maker marked or otherwise marked in a manner which denotes which force it was used by.

Israeli War of Independence Palmach member's pin with variant design, 1948-1949
23070490
Rare variant of the Palmach emblem breast badge, c. 1948-1949; not maker-marked: this is supposed to be the design of Yitzhak Meir based on the original by Shoshana Spector; size: 1.2 x 1.5cm; weight: 0.8g: bears 6-leaved sheaths (instead of the usual 4, as per the Palmach's official emblem design), and the area below the sword, between the wheat sheaths is filled in and not punched-out as on other such pins. Reverse has safety-pin attached. The pin was issued to everyone who was a Palmach member prior to 29 November 1947 (the date on which the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to partition Palestine - the unofficial start of the 1947-49 Israeli War of Independence). Veterans say it was issued just prior to the declaration of independence, during a Palmach assembly at the 'HaBima' theater commemorating the force's 7th anniversary, on 7 May 1948, when it was less dangerous to be seen in Mandatory Palestine openly identified as a member of the as-then underground force. The pin was usually worn on the flap of the left pocket of an army shirt/tunic, sometimes with cloth backing, though rarely seen worn. The Palmach existed as an independent armed force even after the IDF was created, until November 1948, when it was absorbed into the Israeli Army; it numbered about 6,500 fighters of whom 1,500 fell in the War of Independence. The Palmach pin was later replaced in 1951 by the blue and white War of Independence ribbon.

The pin depicts the organization's emblem of an outstretched arm holding a rifle against a map of 'Greater Israel', set against a design of the crenelated battlements of the Old City of Jerusalem, with leaf spray at base and the Etzel's motto "Only Thus" (Hebrew 'Rak Kach') in exergue. Rare undocumented numbered award issued by Irgun/Etzel/IZL Zionist underground
24370492
Palestine/Israel: rare undocumented numbered decoration of Irgun/Etzel Zionist-Revisionist underground, circa. late 1940s-early 1950's; not maker-marked; size: 25.50 x 12.50mm; weight: 4.25g. Single contoured rectangular metal piece with 2 colored stripes, blue & white, on a coarse surface, with the Etzel's emblem within circle superimposed in the center. On the reverse is a stamped number (1523) + screw-back with washer. The reverse is incused along the area where the organization's emblem appears on the front. Undocumented award: some say issued to IZL members in the Jewish Brigade (due to the blue-white flag device on the pint), but serial numbers seen on other examples are higher than the Brigade's size. The badge was probably awarded during or after the 1948 War of Independence in recognition of service, as with Palmach, Haganah & Lechi awards; this is a credible suggestion as the official "Etzel Ribbon" was only created in 1979, and there is no mention of the Etzel "veterans Association" (est. 1961) on this piece.

Rare early period Israeli Army/IDF General Staff emblem service pin, 1948-1950
19870494
Extremely rare Israeli Army General Staff ("Matkal" - 'Mateh Clalli') member breast pin, circa. 1948-50; not maker-marked; 10 x 20mm; 1.2g. The die-stamped & cut front bears the symbol of the pre-State "Hagana" militia, adopted as the newly-founded IDF's General Staff emblem, superimposed on an inner dotted circle and itself surrounded by olive weaths. One indication of its early date is the style of the olive branch intertwined with the sword: as with the Hagana emblem the branch is upright with two leaves close together over the sword. Later versions of this basic design depict a curved branch with two leaves spaced well apart over the sword - one horizontal and the lower one vertical. A safety-pin is soldiered on the reverse. A rare insignia not documented in available period photographs: as with other IDF service pins, this one would have been worn on the breast pocket flap of an IDF uniform. During this period a similar, larger metal badge was worn on visored hats and berets. In excellent condition, with very light wear but exhibiting full detail and some luster.

Jewish pilot/aircrew pin probably 1948 Israeli Independence War Machal volunteer
25270495
1947-1949 War of Independence era Jewish pilot's wings; not maker-marked; 37 x 9.5mm; 0.95g. The wings have the appearance of a private manufacture: an etched design on a thin die-cut piece of metal depicting a six-pointed Star of David between two pointed wings - reminscent of the United States Air Force pilot's wings. Although Jewish aviators volunteered in various conflicts/campaigns in the 20th Century, this pin was probably worn by a Jewish volunteer ("Machal" - Hebrew acronym for "Foreign Volunteer") - probably an American - in the nascent Israeli Air Force, and probably in the pre-State period as this is a non-official badge and the design focuses only on the Star of David and bears no reference to Israel or its military. The safety-pin reverse is consistent with the type used in this period in Palestine/Israel, and is soldiered to the back. The Israeli Airforce numbered 607 aircrew personnel in total, of whom 426 were foreign volunteers (92 non-Jewish); 182 were from the US. Rare and unique.

Israeli Army/IDF Independence War era military training manual The Rifle 1948
24170498
Nascent Israeli Army training manual "The Rifle" 1942 3rd edition reprinted June 1948. The booklet is of a standard paperback type produced in 1948 by the "Training Division of the High Command", here this is booklet 3 of volume A of a training series called "Light Weapons Training": the cover gives the date of 14 May 1948 (Israel's independence date - prior to the establishment of the Israeli Army, when the Jewish military forces were still primarily the 'Haganah') although the printing time is given as June 1948 (when the IDF already came into being). The booklet has a thick paper cover and contains 64 pages, with many illustrations. Although David ('Mickey') Marcus wrote a military training manual of his own for the IDF based on his West Point education and experience it is very possible that these translations of British military training manuals were reprinted in line with Marcus' observation that the Israeli forces largely lacked even rudimentary military training: his manual was published after his death and the printed date here is from the same month as his death.

Pre-State Israeli Haganah 50th Anniversary medal 1970, by Elisha medal company
21870505
Haganah 50th Anniversary medal (ND), 1970; struck in silvered bronze; minted by the Elisha medal company in Israel; weight: 91.8g; size: 59.5mm. Though the medal is listed in Haffer a being from 1968, it cannot be both from this date and also in commemoration of the Haganah's 50th anniversary, as the Haganah was founded in 1970; as Golomb died in 1945 an issue date with a round number like 1970 makes more sense to commemorate both him and the Haganah.
