1948 interim mail/Nahariya slogans: 1ST SLOGAN PROOF printed on light blue-green Gestetner watermarked paper, size: 19.8 x 14.6cm. This is Type B of the 1st slogan, designed by Shlomo Shoshani, and used later on 22 March as a replacement for Type A for design problems including the incorrect date. The 1st slogan was only used for 1 day (22 March 1948). Only about 14 covers are known marked by either type of the 1st slogan; here as a Proof very rare & depicts the postmark at an early stage of use. 1948 interim mail/Nahariya 2ND SLOGAN 1st Day of use: 2x superb full strikes dated 23 MAR 1948 tied to front & back of cover to Rina Shine HAIFA (from "Shitz" in Nahariya), franked 10m using Mandate pictoral (Ba 97) & cancelled 26 MAR 48 by Haifa machine cancel; vertical fold at center, slit open at top. The slogan was applied to mail carried by the emergency sea-route established while Nahariya was under siege, once a service fee of 20mil had been paid (for outgoing mail). The pre-applied frank (10m for letter rate) was then cancelled when the letter was deposited with the Mandate postal service in Haifa. This 2nd slogan design was in use for only 2 days (23-24 March); covers sent on the 23rd were cancelled in Haifa on the 26th. Certified by Aloni & Tsachor. Estimated value $5000+

1948 interim 1st Day & 'Last Day'/3 period/besieged Nahariya incoming mail: undated cover from TEL AVIV to NAHARIYA ("near Haifa") franked 10mil using a Kofer HaYishuv stamp + invalid 10m denominated JNF label perhaps for patriotic purposes & tied by full strike of local interim postmark (although Kofer HaYishuv stamps were unauthorized for postal use, in the period March-April 1948 these were used for patriotic reasons by senders and generally accepted by the post offices who transmitted those letters onwards; as accepted, cover not taxed); cover was transmitted by Minhelet Ha'am post at the Haifa Head Post Office to Nahariya Local Council mail service which transferred it by sea to Nahariya, where incoming mail service charge was collected by affixing "11 mil" red local delivery stamp - this rare and used only towards the end of the service once the yellow label supply was exhausted, and "cancelled" using newly reintroduced Mandate Nahariya postmark dated 21 MY 48 - first day of use of this postmark and last day of the Local Council's emergency mail service. Cover probably mailed 14 May (last day of Minhelet Ha'am mail outside of Nahariya); siege on Nahariya lifted 17 May; sea-route transit time was c.3 days. Slit open at top, very fine. Estimated value $800-1000.
