8/1948 British airmail to (military zone) JAFFA, refused service by Israel, censored & returned
14770951
1948 Israeli "no service" marks on mail TO ISRAEL: 12 VIII 1948 air mail commercial cover on business stationary from LONDON to business at post office box in JAFFA ("Palestine"), meter franked 6d; oddly the receiving Post Office in TEL AVIV rejected the cover - without highlighting any specific problem & marking the whole address area with 2-line former Mandate instructional marking handstamp "RETURNED TO SENDER | NO SERVICE" K-Type-F-III & passed it on to the military censor Tav 6 which approved it (without opening it): although the address says "Palestine" (and this name was widely used then still by foreign postal authorities) the probable reason for the rejection is that the whole locale - part of Israel since May - was still a military zone (with certain formerly Arab-held areas being "closed" zones or under "military government" - in Jaffa, until July 1949), hence the censoring of incoming mail (from Europe) and service rejection. Opened roughly at left, piece missing. Unusual handling (not documented in Kibble) & unclear how long this postal policy existed.

1/1949 unique Army post handling of mail to Israel refused service via Arab country
16370952
1948-49 War Syrian airlink with Palestine: 25-1-1949 air mail family correspondence cover from BRUSSELS to Shaare Tzedek Hospital JERUSALEM "Palestine", franked 6F per postage period rate & tied by 2x strikes of local postmark and deposited in post box for dispatch (front marked such); as addressed "Palestine" not routed to ISRAEL & instead via SYRIA which maintained air-link to Palestine via JORDAN except when interrupted by the war, Jan-Mar 1949 ("Israel"-bound mail would have been left to Jordan to handle): here backstamped 30-1-49 DAMASCUS transit (full strike) where address manuscript-noted in French "zone Israel" - this rare as other covers not sorted such - and cover marked by rare 3-line French language "Return to Origin | Communication with Palestine | Interrupted" instructional marking handstamp K-Type-I & returned to sender. Cover resent 21-2-1949 per backstamp and now correctly routed to ISRAEL where address translated into Hebrew (red manuscript): as hospital served as a military hospital, cover processed by army post office & backstamped twice 28 II 49 APO-5 (JERUSALEM) transit. Extremely rare: less than 5 covers known marked by the Syrian instructional marking (none censored by Syria) - and this is the only Arab "no service" cover in Kibble's extensive collection also marked/handled by the Israeli military post. Opened roughly at top & repaired/reconstructed; a few minor pieces of edge missing.

5/1948 Independence War besieged TZFAT Palmach mail couriered through front lines
16170953
1948 War of Independence/besieged Safed: stampless 6 MAY 1948 dated Hagana military mail from SAFED Town Commander (Elad Peled of the Palmach) to Commander of "Hazit Gimmel" (3rd Front), probably Shmuel (Mula) Cohen, commander of the 3rd battalion of the Palmach's Yiftach Brigade (prior to 23 May there were no "Front" designations in the military, and the first appointed to the northern region was Moshe Carmel who prior to this was in charge of Haifa & the western Galillee) tied by Town commander's cachet 1x on front & 2x on back; here mailed on day of failed attempt to capture the town fortress ("Metzuda"); operation to liberate the city took place 10-12 May. Safed was under complete siege from 16 April - 2 May, with postal services resuming 4 May & semi-siege lifted 11 May. During most of this time communication was by Army couriers through the lines; cover vertically folded 3 times as typical of couriered covers + lacks postal markings. Very fine, slit open at top. Rare as Safed military mail.

4/1950 Doar Ivri franked registered Army mail from KABA 145 General Headquarters RAMAT GAN
11371231
Doar Ivri PO's, rates & routes: 26-4-1950 registered military cover from unit KABA 145 (General HQ - administration)/RAMAT GAN to wares & inventory division in YAFO franked 25pr at the DO-2 rate (free military letter rate + 25pr registration) using 10pr + 15pr singles (Ba3/4) tied by 2 full strikes of RAMAT GAN postmark + 2 on back, with triangular Kaba stamp on front & back; slit open at top, tear to back-flap. The dispatch from the civilian post office was probably necessary in order to use the registered mail service; the Kaba handstamp waived the cover from the standard letter fee & was probably pre-applied to the cover before use.

8/1950 franked registered Army official mail from KABA 369 Army Pay Office JAFFA
11071232
1950 1st airmail / PO's, rates & routes: 3-8-1950 registered military cover from Central Army Pay Office KABA 369 in JAFFA to TEL AVIV franked 40pr at the DO-2 period rate (15pr letter + 25pr registration) using single 1st Airmail 40pr (Ba34, damaged at lower right perforation) frank tied by single strike of JAFFA-1 postmark on front + 2 on back + triangular Kaba handstamp on front & back, with boxed "Official Mail" and Mandate R-label Sacher-RK on front; slit open at left, very fine. The dispatch from the civilian post office was probably necessary in order to use the registered mail service; as the "official" handstamp was used, the sender was probably not entitled to postage-free military mail and the Kaba handstamp was probably pre-applied prior to use - however the sender, oddly, paid the full postage anyway. Official mail was free for regular mail until February 1951 (and then again from July 1952).

2/1953 franked government mail to Army Intelligence corps + military postal markings
12271233
Israeli army military postmarks / 1952 Weizmann: 15-2-1953 cover from Foreign Ministry at the KIRYA to the Placement Office of the Intelligence Corps, franked 30pr per DO-3a period inland letter rate, using 1952 Weizmann frank Ba-76 tied by TEL AVIV machine slogan cancel; cover tied by 7 II 1953 large violet "Postal Office of the Army" handstamp (mis-aligned dateline, probably supposed to be dated the 17th) & 17-2-1953 double-ringed "Communications Center | 1093(?)" arrival postmark - all unlisted in Harris (including PO identification) - and backstamped 17-2-53 TEL AVIV-YAFO 80 arrival; torn open at right, piece missing. Oddly, as Government-originating mail not requiring special service like registration, this cover should have been eligible for free/stampless 'official mail' service - but the cover was not marked such, so handled as regular inland civilian mail (official mail by regular mail resumed being free from July 1952).
