Original Holocaust artifact photograph of civilians under guard digging graves
28870460
First-hand Holocaust artifact: black & white photograph of civilian males under guard, digging graves, in cool/cold weather, undated; presumed eastern Europe and Jews (although no emblems visible). The figures in dark clothes/dark visorless cloth hats look like collaborationist "Schutzmannschaft" (auxiliary police of the German 'Ordnungspolizei') who operated in the Baltics, Belorussia & Ukraine (eg. from July 1941 onwards), although the figure in center with broad black flat-top forage-style hat & round emblem is also reminiscent of the Slovak Hlinka Guard militia. Adding credence that this event may have occurred in Slovakia is actually the apparent lack of 'yellow Stars' or other identifying marks on the civilians' clothes, either on the front, back or arms: the Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 temporarily liberated areas of Slovakia from German & the pro-German Tiso regime; the civilians here may have removed their symbols before being recaptured. Units of the Hlinka Guard (and the local ethnic German SS-Heimatschutz Slowakei anti-partisan 'homeguard' & SS-affiliated Freiwillige Schutzstaffel 'volunteer protection corps') subsequently participated in massacres of Jews, together with the German Einstazgruppen H (mass murder) unit, between 1 September 1944 and February 1945. Size (total) 8.9 x 6.2cm. Printed on "Ridax" (Gevaert Ridax - Belgium) development paper & numbered "29". Top left corner missing, image is creased a few times. Presently stored in sealed plastic pocket.

The Dreyfus Affair & anti-Semitism covered in the French press, 1898
26670462
The Dreyfus Affair in the French press: 22 January 1898 edition of "L'illustration" French illustrated news periodical featuring cover image & illustrated article on General Felix Gustave Saussier (cover image by E. A. Tilly / Auguste Tilly) with 2-page illustration of demontration in his support + illustrated article on an anti-Jewish ("Death of the Jews") demonstration; 16 pages, complete. Appears removed from a folio, so pages loose & left edge with removal marks. The edition doesn't appear to mention Capt. Alfred Dreyfus by name but captures the atmosphere of the time of his trial. General Saussier is believed connected to the Dreyfus case because he may have tried to surpress the investigation that culminated in Dreyfus' indictment, when Saussier was (1894) the vice-president of the Supreme Council of War and military governor of Paris.

Pre-WWII France between Nazism, WWII & Zionism/anti-Semitism in magazine, 1933
18970463
Pre-WWII France between Nazism, WWII & Zionism: 9 September 1933 edition of "L'illustration" French illustrated news periodical featuring 7-page illustrated article on Palestine and Zionism by Emile Schreiber (Émile Servan-Schreiber, 1888-1967, a French-Jewish journalist), the first in a series as declared by the publication at the head of the article in its effort to confront Naziism and anti-Semitism; the edition also features images of an early post-election Nazi rally in Nuremburg (Hitler & Rudolf Hess visible), an article on France's military fortifications, a casual image of bathers on a September beach + many period artistic advertisements; 50 pages + cover, complete. A prophetic timepiece attesting to the cross-roads faced by France and her Jews at that time: the Nazi rally received 1st page coverage, followed by a nod to France's military preparedness; the beach image came next followed by the survey of Palestine: even the writer didn't emigrate there and spent the war in hiding.
