Italian? religious medal with Latin text & Jewish/Christian imagery 18th Century
18870076
Italy(?): religious/Church medal, ND (mid 18th Century); white metal; size: 39mm; weight: 21.15g. Obverse depicts images associated with Judaism surmounted by the Latin Legend "HÆC CORPORIS UMBRA FUTURI" ('The Body Shadow'). On reverse images of wine and literature, with the Latin legend above "PRÆSENTIS SYMBOLA CHRISTI" ('Feast of the Christ'). A medal that generations of numismatists have had difficulty identifying, with most catalogues relegating it to their "miscellaneous" sections (Antoine-Feill 1908, Sally Rosenberg 1932 #1308); the "Numophylacii Ampachiani" catalogue 1830 part 2 #8987 doesn't credit an engraver to the piece. Rosenberg suggests the piece may be the work of Martin Omeis, but his portfolio consists of portrait medals (Forrer v.4 p.321); Antoine-Feill gives the medallist as "EF", which Bernhard ("Medaillen und Plaketten", p.213) renders as the famous Swedish minter Carl Enhörning - but this medal is not in his style.

American Christian prayer tallion with the Priestly blessing & 10 Commandments
19670077
US: Christian(?) prayer tallion with the Priestly blessing (Cohen's blessing) with image of two lions holding up the Tablets with legend "Keep Holy the Ten Commandments"; size: 28.75 x 33.5mm; weight: 7.35g. The Cohen's blessing exists in Christian liturgy as the "Priestly blessing": based on its wording and the emphasis specifically on upholding the 10 commandments (and not referring to the whole 613 / Torah), this is most probably a Christian prayer tallion.

Medals & Tokens of Jewish Customs and Rituals

70079
Russian Moses/Shema Yisrael silver Judaica tallion, possibly by Egorov of Moscow
26270079
Russia: Moses/"Shmah Yisrael" silver prayer Jewish tallion, circa. late 19th Century; possibly Aleksandr Sergeev Egorov of Moscow; size: 18.25mm x 27mm; weight: 2.95g. Oval tallion depicting Moses with rays above his head, holding tablet of the Ten Commandments. On reverse, on 6 lines, in Hebrew, separated by rosette devices, the most important prayer in the Jewish religion, "To the Loyal King: Hear O Israel, the Lord is our G-d, the Lord is One. Blessed is the Name of His Glorious Kingdom for all Eternity". Tallions of this kind were popular in the late 19th Century in Czarist Russia and may have been given as gifts to Bar or Bat Mitzvah boys and girls.

The designs seen on other tallions are almost identical to this one (including the 'rod' device passing across Moses), though the text of the prayer can vary (omitting the first and third utterances). However, with regard to the text used some contain serious incompletions or spelling mistakes (of G-d's name) - perhaps by non-Jewish minters or engravers: here, the prayer is written correctly for a single person (of Ashkenazi tradition) and so opens with "To the Loyal King:" ("El Melech Neeman"). Here the name "G-d" is correctly written in Hebrew as the 4-lettered word "Yehova" rather than with a double "Yud" letter as is seen on other incorrectly designed tallions. As the silversmith's marks are stamped on the loop (obverse side), they are hard to discern but appear to be "AE" with the standard Russian silver content "84" (partially clipped) of that time (84/96th pure silver). Egorov, also spelled "Yegorov" may have been a Jewish silversmith as his name appears on other religious articles of Jewish interest. In F-VF.
