Israeli Bnei Akiva Merkaz Yeshivot 50th anniversary proof state silver medal 1989
17170103
Israel: Bnei Akiva "Merkaz Yeshivot" silver medal (stamped 925 on rim), circa. 1989; 36mm, 14g: commemorates the "Merkaz Yeshivot" (network of Jewish religious studies centers) of the "Bnei Akiva" ("Sons of Akiva") Zionist-religious youth movement. On the obverse of the medal is depicted the building of Bnei Akiva's first Yeshiva high school in the village of Kfar HaRoeh (built in 1939). Medal is in Proof state (with a few handling marks), and given its stylistic design, font face and subject probably dates to 1989 (50th anniversary of the Merkaz Yeshivot).

Eretz Israeli Palestine Athletics silver medal for walking race, 1926 by Dingley
18270219
Palestine/Yishuv: "Palestine Athletics" silver medal (with tallion) for a walking race, 1926; by the firm of William James Dingley (W.J.D.) of Birmingham; size: 35.5mm; weight: 4.15g. Obverse bears stylized engraving between wreath devices, "Jan. 13. 26 Palestine Athletics"; on reverse is engraved "15 Miles Walking Race". The medal is not locally produced, does not contain any Hebrew (or Arabic), or Jewish/Zionist emblems and the event itself is not recorded in standard histories of sports in Palestine, and so is most probably related to a privately organized function by the expatriate British community in Palestine - a school, Church or civic organization (even a governmental function would have either used all three languages or an official emblem). In VF.

Polish Judaica HaShomer HaLeumi Zionist youth movement 1st congress pass 1930
16970251
Poland: "HaShomer HaLeumi" ("National Guardsman") Zionist youth movement "First Legislative Congress" pass, 1930; size: 34.5mm; weight: 1.05g. Round paper token-disk with metal sides; printed on one side, in Hebrew: "The National Guardsman | First Legislative Congress | Warsaw 2nd-3rd [month of] Tevet 5690".

The "HaShomer HaLeumi" was a Zionist youth/scouting movement founded in 1929 by Dr. Reuben Ben-Shem (Feldschue), in Plock, Poland, under the auspicies of the "General Zionists" political movement. As opposed to the socialist-oriented "Labor Zionist" movement and its affiliated youth movement "HaShomer HaTzair" ("The Young Guard"), the "HaShomer HaLeumi" was founded as a semi-rightwing/liberal alternative for Jewish youth - one of several similar revisionist-Zionist leaning movements popular in Poland at that time ("Betar" being one of them).

Different from some, though not all Zionist youth-scout movements, the National Guardsman focused on giving Jewish youth very practical preparations for emigrating to Palestine: nightly Hebrew courses, establishment of "kibbutzim" (Zionist agricultural communal settlements which originated in Palestine) in Poland, scouting skills and scout leader training. In some autobiographies former members emphasize how their knowledge of Hebrew in pre-war Poland gave them a feeling of superiority and self-confidence over their Jewish peers (earning them in turn their peers' envy). The organization was widespread in Poland and many of its members emigated to Palestine in the period of the "5th Aliya" (immigration wave) of 1929-1939. One of the most famous former members of this organization was Moshe Kol (Kolodny), a future minister in the Israeli government and a signatory on her Declaration of Independence.

The Legislative Congress commemorated on this token began on the last day of the Chanukka holiday, on 3-4 January 1930, and although little is documented about the Congress, perhaps as a result of it, in 1931 the "HaShomer HaLeumi" movement amalgamated with other Jewish Zionist scouting organizations and in 1931 became known as "HaNoar HaTzioni" ("The Zionist Youth"), in time part of an umbrella organization founded by Yitzhak Steiger in Galicia and Poland called "The Hebrew Youth Union" ("Histadrut HaNoar HaIvri"). Feldschu had an active history: he was an early member of the Revisionist movement in Poland (1927) and founder of the famous Polish Betar youth wing, before breaking away and founding the National Guardsman; he was tapped to have set out as a representative of his movement, on foot, from Poland to Palestine to protest British restrictions on Jewish immmigration; he attended 4 Zionist Congresses and chronicled the events of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Eretz Israeli 20th Zionist Congress delegate pin by Moshe Moro 1937
16770254
Palestine/Switzerland: 20th Zionist Congress delegate's pin, (1937); nickel(?); manufactured by Moshe Moro of Jerusalem; size: 19.5mm x 22.5mm; weight: 5g. Square shield shaped pin depicting the official emblem of the congress (a Hebrew letter "Kaf" whose numerical value is "20"), with Star of David in right corner and Hebrew legend above "The Zionist Congress". On reverse, a safety pin and Moro's mark. The 20th Zionist Congress took place in Zurich throughout most of August 1937, under the leadership of Menachem Ussishkin (the head of the Jewish National Fund): against the backdrop of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt in Palestine, it debated the position of the Zionist movement with regard to the 1936 Peel Commission's study to establish the practicality of dividing Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states - Ussishkin's faction was opposed, though the faction represented by Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion supported such a partition. In the end, the Congress rejected specific borders recommended by the Commission but permitted its executive to negotiate over them.

Hungarian token of religious-Zionist Bachad youth movement to Palestine, 1947
17570255
Hungary: bronze token of 1st postwar (5th) convention of the religious-Zionist "Bachad" youth movement, in Budapest, 1947; size: 1.75 x 2.1mm; weight: 2.4g. Obverse bears legend in Hebrew: "[Hebrew month of] Tamuz [June-July, in the year] 5707 Fifth Convention Budapest"; on reverse the emblem of the "Bachad" youth movement. The token is designed as a tallion.

"Bachad" - "Brit Chalutzim Datiim", the "Covenant of Religious [Zionist] Pioneers" was founded in German in 1928 to train and prepare religious-Zionist youths to emigrate to Palestine and establish communities there. The movement operated also in Austria, Britain Czechoslovakia, Holland, Hungary, and Romania, and in Poland (under the auspicies of the "Bnei Akiva" and "HaShomer HaDati" youth movements). The movement was established on the basis of another movement called "Tzeirey Mizrachi" ("Mizrachi Youth" - Mizrachi being an existing religious political party) to serve as an umbrella organization for all the religious-Zionist youth movements in Germany, and initially known as "HaChalutz HaMizrachi" before being renamed "Bachad".

The reknowned scientist and thinker, Yeshayahu Leibowitz, prepared the educational program of the movement. In 1937 "Bachad" together with other religious youth movements founded the "Kibbutz HaDati" settlement movement within whose framework it established the Kibbutz 'Tirat Tzvi'. The movement's last pre-war convention was its 4th, in 1934 in Berlin, and this tallion commemorates their 5th convention, in Budapest prior to (and on the eve of) Israel's establishment, with strict immigration quotas and a British sea-blockade on Palestine in place.

Israeli 23rd Zionist Congress bronze hollow-backed pin, 1951
16770256
Israel: 23rd Zionist Congress pin, (1951); bronze; not maker-marked; size: 28.5mm; weight: 3.15g. Hollow-backed badge with safety pin on reverse, with stylized but generic emblem of the Congress - a Menorah - flanked by the Hebrew letters "Kaf" and "Gimmel" (for "23") and the legend in Hebrew around edge, "The Zionist Congress Jerusalem". The 23rd Zionist Congress was only the second one held after the Second World War, and also the first ever held in Israel, in August 1951. To commemorate the accomplishment of the Congress's original aim (the "Basel program" - the establishment of a Jewish state in Israel by political means), the Congress opened at the site of Herzl's grave in Jerusalem (his body was re-interred there in 1949). The Congress therefore focused on the new goals of the Zionist movement in light of Israel's establishment and also called upon the Israeli parliament (the "Knesset") to recognize the World Zionist Organization as the representative body of all Jews in matters related to the connection between diaspora Jewry and the Jewish State. Pins from this Congress and the next exist as both hollow-backed and solid versions: given the novelty of the Congresses being held then in Israel it may be that the hollow-backed types were more widely available, either as souvenirs to the public or for wear by Congress behind-the-scenes staffers and assistants.

Israeli 24th Zionist Congress nickel tallion, 1956
17570257
Israel: 24th Zionist Congress tallion, (1956); nickel(?); not maker-marked, but may be by Kretchmer; size: 28.5mm x 33mm; weight: 12.45g. Uniface tallion bearing similar design to that of the 23rd Congress - a stylized Menorah flanked by the Hebrew letters whose numerical value is "24" and the legend "The Zionist Congress Jerusalem". The 24th Zionist Congress was held in Jerusalem between April-May 1956, under the chairmanship of Nahum Goldman - the Congress had lacked a chairman since Chaim Weizmann resigned in 1946, and it took place against an atmosphere of military insecurity around Israel's borders. The Congress discussed matters of immigration to Israel and immigrant absorption, settlements and fundraising; a proposal to eliminate party divisions within the Zionist movement and instead have regional representation was rejected. Congress emblems from this period are found as hollow-back and solid backed pins (or tallions); given the relative expense of the solid-backed emblems (particularly then, during the period of austerity - the "Tzena"), it's possible that these solid-backed badges were issued to actual delegates of the Congress.

Turkish republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk carpet with Ottoman-Turkish text 1920-23
21070295

Turkey: Mustafa Kemal [Atatürk] carpet, circa. 1920-1923; size: carpet only (not incl. fringes): 59.7cm x 95.7cm. The carpet design is based on a famous 1918 photograph of Ataturk standing in full military uniform, although the rendition on the carpet is more youthful than his appearance in the photograph; below there is a legend in Ottoman-Turkish. The design is reminiscent of a similar weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School, but more artistic, intricate and with Turkish devices in the design: in this instance, with a romantic-militaristic depiction of Ataturk, the rug may date to the period of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), where Ataturk became a dominant national figurehead after his party's victory in December 1919, and Ataturk himself as the head of the nationalist Turkish government in Ankara (Jan. 1920). Rare and undocumented, fully intact.
