Eretz Israeli 20th Zionist Congress delegate pin by Moshe Moro 1937
43470254
Palestine/Switzerland: 20th Zionist Congress delegate's pin, (1937); nickel(?); manufactured by Moshe Moro of Jerusalem; size: 19.5mm x 22.5mm; weight: 5g. Square shield shaped pin depicting the official emblem of the congress (a Hebrew letter "Kaf" whose numerical value is "20"), with Star of David in right corner and Hebrew legend above "The Zionist Congress". On reverse, a safety pin and Moro's mark. The 20th Zionist Congress took place in Zurich throughout most of August 1937, under the leadership of Menachem Ussishkin (the head of the Jewish National Fund): against the backdrop of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt in Palestine, it debated the position of the Zionist movement with regard to the 1936 Peel Commission's study to establish the practicality of dividing Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states - Ussishkin's faction was opposed, though the faction represented by Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion supported such a partition. In the end, the Congress rejected specific borders recommended by the Commission but permitted its executive to negotiate over them.

Turkish republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk carpet with Ottoman-Turkish text 1920-23
52070295

Turkey: Mustafa Kemal [Atatürk] carpet, circa. 1920-1923; size: carpet only (not incl. fringes): 59.7cm x 95.7cm. The carpet design is based on a famous 1918 photograph of Ataturk standing in full military uniform, although the rendition on the carpet is more youthful than his appearance in the photograph; below there is a legend in Ottoman-Turkish. The design is reminiscent of a similar weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School, but more artistic, intricate and with Turkish devices in the design: in this instance, with a romantic-militaristic depiction of Ataturk, the rug may date to the period of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), where Ataturk became a dominant national figurehead after his party's victory in December 1919, and Ataturk himself as the head of the nationalist Turkish government in Ankara (Jan. 1920). Rare and undocumented, fully intact.

Israel: medallion of the 12th Maccabiah (Maccabi Games), 1985; 59mm, 91.8g. The quotation "And the Maccabiim Returned to Modiim" may be a mis-spelling (in English and Hebrew) for the historical city of "Modiin" - perhaps a non-Israeli designer of the medal.

Between 1938-48 the Jewish community in Palestine instituted self-defence fund-raising program (Kofer Ha'Yishuv - 'Community Levy'), a non-voluntary levy self-imposed on the Jews - on imports, entertainment, drinks, & even as imposed contributions during key Jewish holidays (evaders faced "honor courts"). Entry ticket to the First Knesset/1st assembly of the Israeli Parliament 1949
33570357
Entry ticket to the "First Knesset" - the first assembly of the elected Israeli Parliament, 9 March 1949; uniface; numbered 993; size: 10.5 x 7.9cm. The first meeting of the then titled "Constituent Assembly" ('Ha Asefa Ha Mekhonenet') took place already on 14 Feb. 1949, and there it voted to change its name to the "Knesset" and to call the first assembly of that body the "First Knesset". With the establishment of that Assembly, the existing Provisional State Council ('Moetzet HaMedina HaZmanit') dissolved itself and entrusted its powers to the Assembly, making it the State of Israel's legislative body. When this Knesset subsequently convened on 9 March, this was a day after David Ben-Gurion established the State's first government. Between 14-17 February the Assembly convened at the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem; from 9 March to 25 December 1949, the Knesset convened in Tel Aviv - here, at the Dizengoff House, and thence again in Jerusalem.

Israeli khaki denim hat of the Municipality of Rechovot, circa. 1950s
32470358
Israel: khaki denim hat of the Municipality of Rechovot, circa. 1950s. The visored hat is marked "Municipality of Rechovot" in black, in Hebrew on the front. Inside on the crown is a diamond-shaped thick-paper makers-mark similar in style to the diamond marks of other Israeli hat makers of the time; the sweat-band is of a brown faux-leather type used in Israeli military and civilian hats of the 1950's (probably a substitute for scarce leather during this Austerity period). The sweatband contains the original cardboard ring insert, intended to retain the shape of this otherwise soft hat. The use of the khaki color was popular in Israeli clothes of the post-War [of Independence] 1950s, with Prime Minister Ben-Gurion setting the tone himself, and with the color implying a mixture of popular defence as well as popular settlement and development of the State.

1918 WWI Jewish Battalions Eretz Israel Volunteers Medal by Boris Schatz Bezalel
42470466
Palestine: 1918 "Eretz Israel Volunteers Medal", by Boris Schatz (Bezalel); size: 2.45cm; weight: 6g. Obverse: antithetical design of Roman 'Judea Capta' coinage, here depicting "Bat Zion" freeing self from Roman captivity with Hebrew legend "Judea Freeing Herself" in exergue; medallist's name "B Sh Bezalel" at left. Reverse: Kabbalistic symbol with letters of "Shma Israel" and Hebrew legend "For the Volunteers of the Nation in Eretz Israel" & Hebrew date 1849 for "1918" (per dating method as of 70 AD, destruction of 2nd Temple). Issued on 4 July 1918 to local Jewish volunteers setting out to join the 40th Royal Fusiliers (one of the 3 Jewish battalions of the 'Jewish Legion'). This was the first modern military medal ever issued by Jews for Jews - and more so for service in the land of Israel.

Although seldomly encountered and not a standard catalogued item, there is a very precise account of its issue in Ever HaDeni's book "A Nation in its Wars" (publ. 1948; pg. 104): "In mid June-July [month of Tammuz, 1918] there was organized a large assembly at the ruins of the home of Rabbi Yehuda the Chasid in Jerusalem, with the participation of James Rothschild and his escort Lieutenant Lipsy. The son of the Baron [Rothschild] delivered a speech on the importance of the Hebrew [i.e Jewish] Battalion which would fight shoulder to shoulder with the British. After him, spoke Lipsy and the Rabbi Charlap, who said: 'Who is the G-d fearing and good hearted man who will go forth and return to his home.' The wise man Laniado gave support to his son the volunteer and at the same time people distributed fliers sponsored by the Battalion committee with the cry 'Long Live the Hebrew Battalion'. Students of the seminar answered the call and from sixty men, close to 40 enlisted as did 17 year-olds and teachers from the Boys' School. Fathers took with them their sons; mothers sent their children to enlist and brides sent their husbands. The Yemenite community sent upwards of 50 people (from Jerusalem); and volunteers from the religious Yeshivot also came. On 4 July 1918 in the morning, after the departure ceremony, the volunteers were issued a "Bezalel" made medal on which was stamped, 'Bat Zion Who Broke the Chains of Exile' - and depicting the Roman running away from her. At 12 o'clock the volunteers set out by train, accompanied by a crowd of 10,000 people."
