RARE Israeli 25 Mils 1948 half-link variety/error coin some rim corrosion IMMP1a
38970024
Israel - 25 Mils 1948 half-link error/variety, EF (UNC in principle but affected by corrosion on one part of the rim). IMM-P1a. The religious-minded may be interested to note that the published circulation figure of this issue - the only Israeli coin issued in 1948, following the State's establishment - of 42,650 is significantly similar to the number of Jews said to have returned from the Babylonian exile following King Cyrus' edict (per Ezra, Chapter 42 verse 64) - 42,360, of over a million Jews in exile (a paltry figure, so low that there were not enough Kohanim and Levites to serve in the re-established 2nd Temple - a reason given for the period's ongoing observance of Tisha Be'Av). Food for thought.

Silver Judea Restituta clandestine Jewish immigration award by Arazi/Minerbi
26270221
Italy (Israel): "Judaea Restituta" / "And the Sons Have Returned to their Home" medal, 1946; by Jewish-Italian medallist Arrigo Minerbi; struck in silver by Stefano Johnson of Milano; size (medal): 35mm; weight: 29g. Obverse: sailboat with Hebrew legend "Ve Shavu Banim LeGvulam" (Yirmiyahu Ch.31 v.16) above & dates 5705-5706 (1945-1946) in exergue; Minerbi's initials, left + "800" silver, Johnson's on right edge. Reverse: Latin legend "Judea Restituta" (a play on Roman "Judea Capta" coins of 70+ AD) with arch of Titus & gate of Jerusalem's Old City & dates as on obverse in Roman numerals. Commissioned by Yehuda Arazi, Italy commander of "Mossad le Aliya Bet" (secret department of illegal emigration to Palestine) as token of gratitude to local civilians & officials who assisted him in enabling Jews to escape to Palestine, specifically following the "La Spezia affair" (April 1946) in which 2 illegal emigrant ships were stopped by the British, 1000+ Jews revolted, staged a hunger strike & occupied the port - and the public outcry caused the British to release the boats to Palestine. Awarded starting Passover eve, 1946; we estimate that 100-200 were issued. Rare; considered to be Israel's first official medal even as a pre-State issue.

Hungarian token of religious-Zionist Bachad youth movement to Palestine, 1947
30470255
Hungary: bronze token of 1st postwar (5th) convention of the religious-Zionist "Bachad" youth movement, in Budapest, 1947; size: 1.75 x 2.1mm; weight: 2.4g. Obverse bears legend in Hebrew: "[Hebrew month of] Tamuz [June-July, in the year] 5707 Fifth Convention Budapest"; on reverse the emblem of the "Bachad" youth movement. The token is designed as a tallion.

"Bachad" - "Brit Chalutzim Datiim", the "Covenant of Religious [Zionist] Pioneers" was founded in German in 1928 to train and prepare religious-Zionist youths to emigrate to Palestine and establish communities there. The movement operated also in Austria, Britain Czechoslovakia, Holland, Hungary, and Romania, and in Poland (under the auspicies of the "Bnei Akiva" and "HaShomer HaDati" youth movements). The movement was established on the basis of another movement called "Tzeirey Mizrachi" ("Mizrachi Youth" - Mizrachi being an existing religious political party) to serve as an umbrella organization for all the religious-Zionist youth movements in Germany, and initially known as "HaChalutz HaMizrachi" before being renamed "Bachad".

The reknowned scientist and thinker, Yeshayahu Leibowitz, prepared the educational program of the movement. In 1937 "Bachad" together with other religious youth movements founded the "Kibbutz HaDati" settlement movement within whose framework it established the Kibbutz 'Tirat Tzvi'. The movement's last pre-war convention was its 4th, in 1934 in Berlin, and this tallion commemorates their 5th convention, in Budapest prior to (and on the eve of) Israel's establishment, with strict immigration quotas and a British sea-blockade on Palestine in place.

Official Directory of Israeli Government Offices & Departments in the Kirya 1948
34370356
Directory of "[Israeli] Government Offices and their Departments in the Kirya [government-military complex in Tel Aviv]", December 1948; 14 pages. The cover is subtitled "State of Israel - Temporary Governent" and "Temporary List #3"; the handwritten notation ascribes this copy of the "Division of Industry". The directory lists members of the Temporary Government, the Prime Ministers Office, Finance Ministry, Health Ministry, Religious Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, Ministry of Minorities, Trade, Industry and Supply Ministry; the Police and the Police Ministry; Justice Ministry; Ministry for War Victims; Immigration Ministry; Ministry of Labor and Construction; Welfare Ministry; Interior Ministry; Transport Ministry; secretariat of the Kirya and Ombudsman. The directory does not provide addresses and phone numbers but it does list the names of heads of state, ministers, department managers and clerks - and their function/job title. A rare glipse at the structure of the nascent state, still at war for independence, and an incredibly transparent document from a time when it was fashionable to criticize the authority for being opaque, secretive and bureaucratic.

Entry ticket to the First Knesset/1st assembly of the Israeli Parliament 1949
20770357
Entry ticket to the "First Knesset" - the first assembly of the elected Israeli Parliament, 9 March 1949; uniface; numbered 993; size: 10.5 x 7.9cm. The first meeting of the then titled "Constituent Assembly" ('Ha Asefa Ha Mekhonenet') took place already on 14 Feb. 1949, and there it voted to change its name to the "Knesset" and to call the first assembly of that body the "First Knesset". With the establishment of that Assembly, the existing Provisional State Council ('Moetzet HaMedina HaZmanit') dissolved itself and entrusted its powers to the Assembly, making it the State of Israel's legislative body. When this Knesset subsequently convened on 9 March, this was a day after David Ben-Gurion established the State's first government. Between 14-17 February the Assembly convened at the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem; from 9 March to 25 December 1949, the Knesset convened in Tel Aviv - here, at the Dizengoff House, and thence again in Jerusalem.

1st version Israeli Army/IDF khaki Hitelmacher hat with Yiddish hatmakers handstamp
22370488
Rare khaki first version of the Israeli Army 'Hitelmacher' hat bearing the IDF metal insignia badge, circa. 1948. Of the two major varieties produced, this is the earlier, American-made issue in khaki denim (the other version, of Israeli manufacture is made of green denim), and stamped by the donating Yiddish hat makers union of America. This first issue was part of a donated shipment of hats specially produced for the new Israeli Army by the American-Jewish hat makers' union, whose Yiddish title "hitel-macher" (hat-maker) became the Israelis' coined name for these uniquely designed pieces of headwear with fastened collapsable sides (for neck-protection against the sun). The IDF quartermasters' symbol (the Hebrew letter 'Tzadi' in a circle) is stamped on the inside crown of the hat. On the inside rim is the key and significant characteristic of this first issue of hats - the maker's mark: a stamp in transliterated Yiddish spelled in Hebrew letters, reading: "Ai Matana Von Americaner Hitel-Macher Durch Der Initziation Von Trier Union Komitet Fur Histadrut" ('A present of the American hat-makers through the initiative of the Union Committee of the Histadrut' - the Histadrut is the Zionist labor union in Israel).

Israeli Army/IDF/Palmach Independence War era green military sock hat 1947-48
23870489
Rare Israeli Army (IDF) olive green sock hat ("Kova Gerev" in Hebrew), circa. 1947-48. Though widely seen and used during the 1947-49 War of Independence, these hats are surprisingly difficult to come by, possibly because of their fate in the hands of moths and vulnerability to wear and tear in the field: this piece is in near-mint condition. The hat is of double-layered fabric, sewn shut at the head, and can be double folded along the base rim. During the War of Independence, it was widely used by and identified with the elite "Palmach" (strike company) forces, though it was also used elsewhere among the Israeli forces. Around the time the Palmach was absorbed into the IDF, in November 1948, the main pieces of cloth headwear worn by Israeli soldiers were 'hitelmacher' hats, Kangol berets, and various forms of 'bush hats'. The piece is not maker marked or otherwise marked in a manner which denotes which force it was used by.

Israeli War of Independence Palmach member's pin with variant design, 1948-1949
24370490
Rare variant of the Palmach emblem breast badge, c. 1948-1949; not maker-marked: this is supposed to be the design of Yitzhak Meir based on the original by Shoshana Spector; size: 1.2 x 1.5cm; weight: 0.8g: bears 6-leaved sheaths (instead of the usual 4, as per the Palmach's official emblem design), and the area below the sword, between the wheat sheaths is filled in and not punched-out as on other such pins. Reverse has safety-pin attached. The pin was issued to everyone who was a Palmach member prior to 29 November 1947 (the date on which the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to partition Palestine - the unofficial start of the 1947-49 Israeli War of Independence). Veterans say it was issued just prior to the declaration of independence, during a Palmach assembly at the 'HaBima' theater commemorating the force's 7th anniversary, on 7 May 1948, when it was less dangerous to be seen in Mandatory Palestine openly identified as a member of the as-then underground force. The pin was usually worn on the flap of the left pocket of an army shirt/tunic, sometimes with cloth backing, though rarely seen worn. The Palmach existed as an independent armed force even after the IDF was created, until November 1948, when it was absorbed into the Israeli Army; it numbered about 6,500 fighters of whom 1,500 fell in the War of Independence. The Palmach pin was later replaced in 1951 by the blue and white War of Independence ribbon.
