10/1943 WWII censored eastbound overland airmail from TEHRAN to HAIFA via BAGHDAD
20570848
WWII period westbound Baghdad overland mail from Iran: 26 X 1943 registered airmail cover from TEHERAN to HAIFA, franked (on back, covering most of return address) 22D & tied by multiple strikes of local postmark + Persian air mail etiquette on front; opened/resealed locally & tied by #4 Russian & #15 English "Anglo-Soviet-Persian Censorship" handstamp (front/back) + Persian "7" censor cachet (front); backstamped 8 NOV 43 BAGHDAD REG transit & 15 NO 43 REG HAIFA arrival; slit open at left. Long 3-week transit time, suggesting that the cover was actually transported via the Baghdad overland route. If transmitted by air the cover may have been carried by ISA to BAGHDAD (Habbaniyah), then via BOAC on leg of "Horseshoe Route" to TIBERIAS - but this not indicated by the postal markings. Joint Allied-Persian censorship began c. Aug 1942 & ended c. autumn 1945. Interestingly cover not censored in Palestine. Overland mail to Palestine is scarce.

Taxed eastbound mail: c. JULY 1945 commercial cover (from HAIFA?) to TEHERAN, sent via overland service via Baghdad but underfranked at 10m (15m was period rate), tied by machine cancel; backstamped 29 JLY 1945 BAGHDAD transit, where cover censored (front); probably at this stage of transmission, cover damaged: backstamped 15 IX 45 TEHERAN arrival (6 week transit), marked for tax on front (uncollected) + opened/resealed & censored by Anglo-Soviet-Iranian censor (front/back); manuscript on back/front (Farsi?) suggests cover could not be delivered, so returned to sender; received HAIFA 1 NO 45 where top of cover sealed by "Found Open or Damaged" sealing label & tied by local postmark; backstamped 3 NO 45 JERUSALEM RLO (as no return address visible). Unusual 4+ month transit time/occurence. Per Collins et. al. "all mail going eastwards is scarce to very rare".

LATEST RECORED "Baghdad Overland" SPECIFIED [westbound] mail: 20 MAR 1946 registered Jewish family correspondence cover from BAGHDAD to TEL AVIV, franked 60F & tied by strike of BAGHDAD AS-SAMAWAL postmark + once on back; marked "Overland Mail" in manuscript - this being latest recorded cover specifying this route & tied by large pre-printed Registry-label; backstamped same day REG BAGHDAD transit, 25 MR 46 REG JERUSALEM transit & next day REG TEL AVIV arrival; torn open at back & repaired, complete. Scarce destination locale. Collins notes that by this time no special instruction marking handstamps would be needed as overland was the default route to/from Palestine.

11/1946 late period westbound overland airmail from TEHRAN to JERUSALEM via BAGHDAD
17970851
Late period westbound Baghdad overland mail from Iran: 9 XI 1946 registered airmail cover from Jewish Agency TEHRAN to the Jewish National Fund head office JERUSALEM, franked 26R on back & tied by 2 strikes of local postmark; backstamped 13 NOV 46 REG BAGHDAD transit postmark & 15 NOV 46 REG JERUSALEM arrival; opened roughly at top, complete. Interestingly not censored in Palestine. Rare origin & route: as per the week-long transit time & BAGHDAD transit it is probable that the cover was transported via the Baghdad overland service and not by air mail (unless to BAGHDAD only): Collins notes that by this time no special instructional marking handstamp would be needed as overland was the default route to/from Palestine, making this a late-period cover transported via this route. The Jewish Agency's Tehran office opened on 23 June 1943: as the Agency functioned as the government of the Jewish community of Palestine, this is in effect an "official mail" cover. Overland mail to Palestine is scarce.

11/1957 British airmail to TEL AVIV mis-routed via Iraq; refused service & returned
16371256
Iraqi postal boycott of Israel: 1 NOV 1957 airmail cover from LONDON to TEL AVIV, franked 9d & tied by machine cancel; mis-routed via Iraq (backstamped 3 NOV 57 BAGHDAD DELIVERY arrival) where manuscript-marked "No Not Posted" on front + arrow mark pointing to "Israel" & returned to sender undelivered. Rare: misrouted mail via Arab countries other than those in immediate proximity of Israel is rare - via Iraq only 2 covers known; per UPU Circular 13 (29-1-1960) it appears that the Iraqi postal administration simply confiscated Israel-related mail & never reshipped/returned it - hence this cover very rare. Cut open at right.

6/1961 Arab Boycott of Israel 'blacklist' document from Iraqi Embassy LONDON
24671260
Arab Boycott of Israel 'blacklist' document: 2 JUN 1961 mimeographed document-form on 'Roneo Bond' watermarked paper from the Consulate General of Iraq in LONDON certifying that the ship S.S. City of Chester "is not included in the blacklist"; signed by the consul Taha Marouf & tied by a 50 Dinar consular stamp stamped by the Consulate's round illustrated cachet + dater (and also towards top of page). Taha Muhie-eldin Marouf (1929-2009) was an ethnic Kurd in Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party leadership (joining it in 1968); he served as ambassador to Italy, Malta and Albania, and served as Vice President of Iraq from 1974 until the US invasion in May 2003; Marouf was on the US's list of most-wanted Iraqis & represented in the "Most-wanted Iraqi" playing cards. The named ship was built in 1944 (scraped circa. 1971) and belonged to Ellerman Lines, a British cargo and passenger shipping company. The significance of the ship not being on the "blacklist" is that neither it not its parent company had any dealing with the State of Israel.

The blacklist is a register of global firms that engage in business with Israel, and is maintained by the Damascus-based Central Boycott Office - a specialized bureau of the Arab League, and is disseminated to Arab League members. The League is an umbrella organization comprising 22 Middle Eastern & African countries and entities, and has maintained an official boycott of Israeli companies and Israeli-made goods since the founding of Israel in 1948. Ironically, the son of the co-founder, John Ellerman, Sir John Reeves Ellerman, 2nd Baronet (1909–1973), helped Jews escape Nazi Germany and even earned the wrath of William Joyce ("Lord Haw-Haw" on the radio) who attacked him by name in his propaganda broadcasts, incorrectly claiming that he was of Jewish descent.
