Israeli Military Industries 20 years of service medal of appreciation, 1968
28770282

Transocean (1946-1960) was founded in 1946 by Orvis Nelson, staffed by newly discharged war veterans and established on a foundation of derring-do: "We fly anything, anywhere, anytime". TAL was involved in several operations involving the covert evacuation and transport of Jews to Israel (with and without the Mossad's involvement) from the 1940's-50's, as well as the transport of other non-Jewish postwar refugees.

Israel: medallion of the 12th Maccabiah (Maccabi Games), 1985; 59mm, 91.8g. The quotation "And the Maccabiim Returned to Modiim" may be a mis-spelling (in English and Hebrew) for the historical city of "Modiin" - perhaps a non-Israeli designer of the medal.

Entry ticket to the First Knesset/1st assembly of the Israeli Parliament 1949
32370357
Entry ticket to the "First Knesset" - the first assembly of the elected Israeli Parliament, 9 March 1949; uniface; numbered 993; size: 10.5 x 7.9cm. The first meeting of the then titled "Constituent Assembly" ('Ha Asefa Ha Mekhonenet') took place already on 14 Feb. 1949, and there it voted to change its name to the "Knesset" and to call the first assembly of that body the "First Knesset". With the establishment of that Assembly, the existing Provisional State Council ('Moetzet HaMedina HaZmanit') dissolved itself and entrusted its powers to the Assembly, making it the State of Israel's legislative body. When this Knesset subsequently convened on 9 March, this was a day after David Ben-Gurion established the State's first government. Between 14-17 February the Assembly convened at the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem; from 9 March to 25 December 1949, the Knesset convened in Tel Aviv - here, at the Dizengoff House, and thence again in Jerusalem.

Israeli khaki denim hat of the Municipality of Rechovot, circa. 1950s
31770358
Israel: khaki denim hat of the Municipality of Rechovot, circa. 1950s. The visored hat is marked "Municipality of Rechovot" in black, in Hebrew on the front. Inside on the crown is a diamond-shaped thick-paper makers-mark similar in style to the diamond marks of other Israeli hat makers of the time; the sweat-band is of a brown faux-leather type used in Israeli military and civilian hats of the 1950's (probably a substitute for scarce leather during this Austerity period). The sweatband contains the original cardboard ring insert, intended to retain the shape of this otherwise soft hat. The use of the khaki color was popular in Israeli clothes of the post-War [of Independence] 1950s, with Prime Minister Ben-Gurion setting the tone himself, and with the color implying a mixture of popular defence as well as popular settlement and development of the State.

Israel Air Force/IAF Base 27 (Lod) uniface recognition medal
34470530

Israel Air Force Base 27 (Lod) uniface recognition medal (ND); struck in bronze; no maker-mark; weight, 93.6g; size, 59.5mm: obverse depcits symbol of the IAF bases with legend above in Hebrew "In recognition for your services at Air Force Base 27". Probably a 1973 Yom Kippur War medal of recognition for the services of the recipient. Base 27 was the base at Lod airfield (known in Hebrew as "Basis Kheyl haAvir Lod", whose civilian airport there is the Ben Gurion International airport), and serviced transport aircraft. Among the important wartime transportion operations that would have occured in Lod, the American airlift of arms to the IDF (starting 14 October) would have been one of the most critical. Base 27 closed in 2008 and was transferred to the Nabatim base (Base 28) in the Negev. In UNC, with lacquered surface.

Obverse bears stylized image of 11 airplanes in motion with legend in Hebrew "In Appreciation from the Air Force"; on reverse the emblem of the air force (with old style of writing the name "Kheyl Avir" rather than "Kheyl HaAvir") with quotation from the Book of "Tehilim", "And He Will Exhalt You to Inherit the Land" (strangely spelled with two letters "yud" instead of one in "ViYeromemkha"). Likely issued in appreciation of service by a foreign citizen around the time of the Yom Kippur War (1973), and a good instance would be the air train of supplies sent to the IDF during the war to replenish its weapons stocks. In AU-UNC, with lacquered surface and a few specs of light green oxidation.

Israeli Army/IDF 6800th Replacement Equipment Center Yom Kippur War medal, 1973
35170532

IDF 6800th Center for Combat and Replacement Equipment ("Matzlakh") Yom Kippur War commemorative medal, 1973; struck in bronze; no maker-mark; weight, 81.65g; size, 60mm: a pre-designed medal for the Ordinance Corps ("Kheyl Khimush") and engraved for this specific unit; obverse depicts the Corp's emblem with Hebrew legend "The Eyes of Jacob in Recognition | 1973 | For Your Contribution to the War Effort"; reverse depicts seven small images of the activities of the Corps, with this unit's name engraved in the center. Not to be confused with a different force known also by its initals as "Matzlakh" - the "combat photographers center" of the Communications Corps, this force's responsibility is to manage the stocks of ordinance inventory in the IDF's supplies. An obscure sub unit within an important force during the war: as the IDF lost a lot of equipment in the initial surpise attack on Israel, the Ordinance Corps' work was vital in re-servicing damaged equipment in order to resupply the military. In EF-AU with a few light surface scratches and a few signs of red paint (perhaps the medal originally bore some red color).
