1948-49 War Syrian airlink with Palestine: 7 JAN 1949 airletter from LONG ISLAND CITY to JERUSALEM "Palestine", pre-franked 10c per postage period rate & tied by local machine cancel; as addressed "Palestine", not routed to ISRAEL & instead via SYRIA which maintained an air-link to Palestine via JORDAN except when interrupted by the war, between January-March 1949 ("Israel"-bound mail would have been left to Jordan to handle): here backstamped [unclear] 1949 DAMASCUS transit where marked by rare Syrian 3-line French language "Return to Origin | Communication with Palestine | Interrupted" instructional marking handstamp K-Type-I & returned to sender (using American 'pointing hand' cachet). Less than 5 covers known such marked (none censored by Syria) - this being the earliest known date of use per postmark date (estimated Damascus arrival 12 Jan).
