War of Independence pre-State/Yishuv military draft document, March 1948: call-up card of the "Center of the Assembly for National Service" ("Mifkad Ha'am") - the pre-State system for nationwide military enlistment which functioned between the United Nation's resolution calling for the partition of Palestine (29 November 1947), and Israel's declaration of Independence (14 May 1948), which was established by the pre-State Hagana militia in conjunction with the government of the Jewish community in Palestine, the "National Committee of the Assembly of Israel" (the 'Vaad Leumi' - the future Israeli Parliament, the 'Knesset') and the "Jewish Agency for Palestine" (the executive branch of the Jewish government). This document was issued to Joseph Melnik, born in 1919 and living in Kfar Blum. The notice, signed (stamped) by the chairmen of the National Committee, Dr. Binyamin Avniel (a future member of Knesset), Levi Eshkol (the future Prime Minister) and P. Gilboa, orders Melnik to report for duty at Kfar Blum for the period from the issuing date of 30 March 1948 to 15 May 1948 (i.e. the day after the declaration of independence - the first day of Israel as an independent country). The actual draft assignment is stamped on the back by the Center, represented by "P. Gilboa". The card is light-green with some age toning, intact with just a few minor crease marks.
