"Hagana" ('Self-Defence') service ribbon with paper award holder of the Ministry of Defence, with "Hagana Ribbon" stamped below. The ribbon is the early version with a safety-pin back and is back maker-marked by "Mori" of Jerusalem. There is light oxidation to edge of the pin.

This ribbon was awarded either to those who were members of the Hagana ("Defence") organization for a period of at least six months between 1920 and the Day of Independence of Israel, or to all members of the Hagana who were killed, wounded, arrested or took part in operations (in case the eligible person died, a member of his family - husband, wife, parent, brother, sister, child or grandchild - could request to receive the ribbon or replacement of lost or worn ribbon).

Presentation of the ribbon started in 1958, and it appears that this item is one of the first samples produced as per the envelope sent regarding it's issue to Shalom Furer: an envelope from the Ministry of Defence, Manpower Division's "Center for the Self-Defence Ribbon", sent to Shalom Furer, with mail label and stamp of the Ministry of Defence.
