24th Kinneret (Sea of Galillee) March in honor of David Elazar uniface token, 1983; aluminum(?); weight: 15.6g; 37mm. Obverse depicts image of the Sea of Galillee with legend "The 24th Kinneret March in memory of Rav Aluf [Lieutenant-General, i.e. Chief of Staff] David Elazar Z.L. [eg. R.I.P], Jordan Valley Regional Council", and symbols of the regional council and the Hapoel sports federation.
The Kinneret March is held annually to this day in memory of the Elazar, who was Chief of Staff during the Yom Kippur War (1973). Though born in Yugoslavia, the connection between the Sea in the north to him is probably due a) to his activities in reprisal raids against infiltrators in this region in 1954-55, and b) to his service as Northern Regional commander from 1964-1972 during which time in the Six Day War (1967) he oversaw the capture of the Golan Heights.
