Description

WWII/Holocaust era camps > Gleiwitz: 14-12-1939 stampless photo picture postcard of Wilhelmstrasse with family correspondence in German from husband to wife, from GLEIWITZ Germany to VIENNA ("Ostmark" - the Nazi-era name for Austria, from 1938-1942), tied by violet circular handstamp of the Gleiwitz concentration camp + carmine boxed cachet of the camp censor & illustrated machine slogan cancel ("jetzt heist es die plichtun und fontger nichts" - 'now it does not mean anything or nothing' -?). The locale was the site of the outbreak of WWII; rare mail from a camp presently undocumented for this period: there was a satellite camp of Auschwitz here in 1944-45.
